ADHD Q&A
What is attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?
ADHD or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is a mental health disorder characterized by ongoing difficulties with inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which means the symptoms are the result of abnormal brain development during the early childhood years.
ADHD symptoms usually appear during childhood. Though once thought of as a condition children outgrow, it’s now known that ADHD is a life-long mental health condition. However, symptoms change over time, and many people develop skills that help manage ADHD symptoms.
What are the symptoms of ADHD?
ADHD symptoms fall into three categories: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
Inattention
With inattention, you may have a hard time completing projects, focusing, or following conversations. You may also struggle with organization.
Hyperactivity
Hyperactivity is a constant need to move, especially during times when it’s not appropriate. For example, a child needs to stand up and pace at various times during the school day because they can’t sit in the chair.
In adults, hyperactivity may appear as restlessness or talking too much.
Impulsivity
Impulsivity is a behavior where you react without thinking about the consequences. You have a hard time with self-control. People with ADHD may interrupt others or speak out of turn.
It’s important to note that it may be possible to have a mix of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.
